918. We don’t bother with Mars and Venus

“Muhé di Punda, homber di Otrobanda” (Women are from Punda, Men are from Otrobanda)

The Dutch employed a certain geographic literalism in the naming of our harbor.

The Dutch named the area housing Fort Amsterdam (seat of government): de punt – Punda in Papiamentu (“the point”),  a clear reference to the small peninsula jutting out onto St. Anna Bay.

The Dutch referred to the land across the bay as de overzijde – Otrobanda in Papiamentu (“the other side”) of the harbor.

Punda and Otrobanda combined make up Willemstad, the capital of Curaçao.
