830. Palabra di Siman (Word of the Week)

Back when we were growing up in the 80s Fundashon Promové Balor Positivo (Foundation to Promote Positive Values) would publish a “Palabra di Siman” (Word of the Week) in our Monday newspapers. A single motivational word to get us all through the week.

Radio and TV personalities would cite this word on their shows: “nos palabrrrrraaaah di siman ta [Solidaridat, Pasifismo, Dignidat, Konfianza, Kariño, Sinseridat, Loyaldat]”

Folks from all walks of life would dial in to discuss what the word means to them and how they practice [Solidaridat, Pasifismo, Dignidat, Konfianza, Kariño, Sinseridat, Loyaldat] in their daily lives.

Needless to say, these words brought us together (like, the entire island of 150K). Quite literally getting us all on the same page.

“So you refuse to visit your sick grandmother? (…) Our word of the week is kariño…”

“You lied about finishing your homework? (…) Our word of the week is sinseridat…”

(Palabra di Siman still exists… but folks are less enthusiastic about it)
