905. “Lastra Riba Tapa” Bike Racing

By Juan-Carlos Goilo

We call this activity “lastra riba tapa” (drag on bottom) bike racing. I was blown away by this phenomenon a few years back. I think it’s worth some coverage on this blog, about all things awesome… after all, it goes to show how obsessed yu’i Kòrsou are with “Fever” (street races, drifting, etc.)

In other parts of the world adolescents are happy to have the freedom / mobility a bike affords them, but in Curaçao riding bikes turns into a crash course in “Fever”. Both literally and figuratively! Just take a look at some of the tricks the Santa Maria racing team pulls off in this video… Take a look at the re-engineered back wheels to appear more extended, e.g. Hayabusa Motorcycles, the simple ingenious idea of using the lid of a can or an ice cream tray to simulate drifting… All this creativity for the illicit “sport” of street races. Awesome!

(We particularly love the bloopers by “The Beast”… have to assume his nickname implies Bestia = idiot in Papiamentu…)
