853. Curaçao’s Soccer Rookie: Vurnon Anita

Born and raised in Curaçao, Vurnon Anita (23), was scouted by Ajax and joined their famous youth training program at 10 years old. He was starting for Ajax by 16 and covered a range of positions from 2005-2012. He’s a versatile player, but plays best in midfield. Unfortunately Vurnon missed the Dutch World Cup 2010 selection by a hair.

He made headlines for transferring from Ajax to Newcastle United for £6.7 ($10.7) million (5-year contract) in August 2012. Lee Ryder at the ChronicleLive.co.uk reports that Dutch international soccer legend and Ajax Coach, Frank de Boer, admits that he has lost one of the best young players to have come through the ranks of the Amsterdam Arena in recent years:

“He is one of the hardest working young players I have ever seen. He deserves a move to a club like Newcastle United.” [Among the best English teams]

“He never complained once to me about having to drop back into another position. In training he works like he is playing a game and that it means everything. In the one and half years I worked with him he did not stop working. That is what has resulted in his transfer to Newcastle.”

“Newcastle fans will see a player who can deal with the game in England. He gives 300% for you. He is always concentrating on his game and he never ever gives up. He has a bright future ahead.”

Not surprising, Vurnon has gotten off to a GREAT start, scoring (arguably) the most Awesome goal of the season against Club Brugge (11/8/2012).
