Queen Juliana Bridge as seen from the top floor of the Renaissance Hotel / Riffort Complex parking lot in Otrobanda. Amazing photo by Lisette de Gouveia.
This bridge also happens to be fifth grader Liam’s favorite thing about Curaçao “because it fell apart the first time it was built. It remembers the people who died on the bridge by a monument. I also like the bridge because it can hold so many cars at once.” Liam told us that his mom tries to avoid this bridge (the tallest in the Caribbean at 185 feet / 56.4 meters) as much as possible, but that he’s really into “the colorful buildings you see on one side and the smokey pipes on the other” (…) “sometimes we can even see Venezuela!” (Not in the same way Sarah Palin sees Russia from Alaska…) On clear days, we can actually see Venezuelan mountains while crossing this bridge. Awesome.
[The original structure of the bridge collapsed in 1967, its replacement opened on Queen’s Day (April 30) 1974 and is named after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands]
